This article is all about exploring and revealing the Seat of the Soul to our inner being from the perspectives of yoga, divine-worship and esoteric Christianity. It also dispels some of the common myths, misconceptions and misleading information found in a lot of online spiritual literature. It explains how and why our Seat of the Soul is one of the key areas of the body that once mastered provides you with the stability and self-assuredness you need to live a happy, meaningful and fulfilling life.
Spiritual awakenings begin in this mysterious region of the body, earth energies may rise up through the legs and flow to this region of the body when we open and expand the energy channels through kryria-yoga. The esoteric Kundalini evolutionary energy may unwind from the tip of the coccyx tailbone and pushing us to evolve and to discover our true-self whilst coming into higher consciousness or self-realisation. Discomfort and disharmony in the pelvis are what contributes to heightened stress, anxiety, loss of grounding and loss of comfort and bodily security, which I term as being embodied rather than disconnected and unaware.
The Pelvic Basin
I often read people stating that the Seat of the Soul is the Pineal gland found in the physical brain, however from my perspective this is better presented as the gateway to spirit as it connects with the inner third-eye (pineal gland) in conjunction with the brow chakra which is a part our of metaphysical anatomy into spirit. This gland enables us to see spiritual manifestations through clairvoyant vision and at times may also become activated through psychotropic drugs like ayahuasca plant medicine, prayer or meditation.
So where is the Seat of the Soul then? You’re probably sitting on it! The true seat of the soul is to be found inside the pelvis as the pelvic basin and the pelvic floor muscles that form a cradle suspension for the body, the glutes, psoas muscles, the tailbone and the sexual organs. Upon study, this area of the body looks and feels like a natural seat. The pelvic bowl contains a lot of unexplored areas when it comes to addressing our health, well-being and sexuality and affects both males and females in different ways.
The pelvic bowl is met by the tip of the tailbone at the base of the spine, which extends into the crown of the head and acts as both a physical conduit for various body fluids as well as a flexible stabilising structure designed and shaped like a serpent due to its flexibility and support that it offers. The spine itself forms our individual spiritual “Tree of Knowledge” and through the lessons, we learn, the skills and knowledge we gain that we may then utilise and reap the fruits and benefits both in this lifetime and other subsequent lifetimes.
When the tip end of the tailbone is subtly adjusted it creates very noticeable changes to the pressure against the pelvic basin muscles. This helps to stimulate and affect our level of comfort or discomfort including our feeling of embodied security and at times level of comfort which helps us to feel happy, secure or potential more vulnerable depending upon our unique preference of being. Any change to our tailbone at this level will have a very marked difference in our demeanour and the manner and way in which we walk, which can make all the difference to walking confidently with poise.
A change in the tailbone can also have a dramatic effect upon our mood, level of comfort and at times sexual arousal where both Kundalini energy is stored and the root chakra associated with sexuality and security also sits close to. Connecting both sides of the pelvic basin are the perennial muscles, in men these muscles are connected to the genitals and in women they stretch around the genitals either side. The pelvic floor is also responsible for our sense of urgency, which is designed to push and motivate us to address a particular issue or take action to resolve an immediate problem through deliberately triggering anxiety so that we respond and do not comfortably ignore something important to our own or others well being and when we do ignore them we experience stress through the body.
The simple act of walking and placing each leg one in front of the other with each step gently stretches the perennial muscles and begins to release tension and energy that contains intuitive information that reveals our sources of anxiety. The stretching of the perineum and pelvic basin muscle groups stimulates us in a highly sensitive area of the body which brings about a shift in our thinking patterns that begins to shape and influence our thoughts through the ego expression of the mind.
When we are self-aware enough to perceive these thoughts and take note of them we can begin to address issues. Many of our fears, anxiety issues are stored in the body itself and they can be revealed and made known in order to be healed. Once we’ve processed and addressed our sources of anxiety, our body relaxes and it begins to provide an embodiment that feels very pleasant and even joyful just to exist and sit within.
Whenever we are too uptight an adjustment to the tailbone can be positive as it has a dramatic ability to create a marked change in mood, this is often done unconsciously through surrendering the body whilst doing a yoga position like Cat-Cow and so it does not require much conscious effort on your part, beyond making sure to hold the position. When the body becomes more easy, open and relaxed, so does our sense of physical embodiment and at times this will also influence vocal intonation. This is evident from people that perform too many loosen hip opening yoga poses such as a happy baby, which can at times encourage bliss addiction.
Walking is not the only activity that enables the processing of anxieties, riding a bike also gently stretches the perennial muscles from side to side, swimming enables us to kick out and release pelvic tension, almost any physical exercise or activity that involves leg movement will stretch out tension such as dancing, climbing, running and doing yoga, all of which help in caring for our soul’s inner seat providing grounding and it’s simply a case of finding what works and is enjoyable for us.
For example, if getting lost during a journey or when being late for an appointment will make us feel physically worried or anxious by causing constriction and muscle contraction of the thighs and pelvic muscle groups. When we manage to make up for lost time, the tension automatically releases from the body making us feel a sense of relief and we begin to feel more grounded again. I’ve observed through interaction that when a person is overly anxious they will often lean forward and why a confident or secure person will often feel more comfortable sitting back in their chair.
Yoga for Body and Spirit
The Seat of the Soul can be worked with through performing yoga that addresses both the body and mind in unison enabling one to come into physical embodiment and heal from anxious issues such as chronic anxiety and social anxiety or shyness.
Whenever we become stressed or anxious our pelvic floor muscles contract in addition to a tightened forehead and scalp which causes the physical stress response that causes discomfort and ungrounding, which affects our feeling or safety, comfort and body security. This is frequently experienced as mild to severe muscular burning that feels similar to experiencing a Chinese burn.
Every single yoga pose works with the pelvic floor because this is the point in the body where the legs and torso cross and intersect, however, there are particular poses that have a more noticeable effect. The vulnerability and swaying of the “happy baby” pose provides a bit of immediate security through creating a sense of ease and bliss as does the “stirrup” pose which makes us feel deliberately quite vulnerable and open which assists in regrounding our state of physical embodiment. Sleeping in bed with one or both legs tucked also provides a slow release of muscular tension in the legs and pelvis.
Hidden within the pelvis there is a core muscle running from the base of the pelvic floor up towards the lower abdomen which is responsible for storing our anxiety issues and social anxiety that causes shyness and bodily discomfort or anxiousness derived from being in the presence of other people.
By holding attention on this muscle and relaxing it using inner intention and felt body awareness it begins to release its tension and become less constricted. I practised this exercise a number of times of up to 30 minutes or more and on the last instance after I had completed the exercise I got up to walk around and perceived an intuitive inner voice that vocalised the thought “I don’t think I’m shy anymore” and I was far more relaxed and comfortable in my body for doing this, it is this which leads me to believe that there’s a link between muscle tension in the deeper pelvic and core muscles and chronic shyness, something I suffered with in my teenage and early adult life. This topic is part of a wider technique I’ve come to call this practise pelvic release which can be read about in more detail in the separate article I’ve written for releasing anxiety and trauma from the body.
The pelvis is also attached to quadricep muscles and I discovered that if you relax the tension in these muscles by placing sustained awareness on them similarly you can simultaneously release the unpleasant muscular burning tension associated with chronic anxiety and hear the thoughts or issue responsible for the contraction within the mind. When we perform this exercise from time to time we begin to lessen the stress and discomfort we feel in the body which brings about disruption to the natural harmonious state of being and ease your pelvic seat.
Whenever we do yoga we stretch the muscle fibres and if done in a pose that is held and sustained over time such as yin-yoga this releases the tension and allows you to process the underlying issue by feeling into the spongey muscle as it connects to the pelvic bone and by relaxing these similar to a body scanning exercise that unwinds and you allow to happen without fearing or pulling back causing contraction as this will block the positive releasing effect.
The traditional prayer position known as prostration or Child’s Pose in yoga is used for worshipping divinity which puts the soul into a surrendered state of being or creates a particular kind of intention that makes us seek in higher spiritual sources for help. In the prayer position, the legs and knees connect to the ground or rest on the backs of the calves, the pelvis is placed parallel to the ground and the body is prostrated forward with the arms outstretched. Simply find a position that feels comfortable to you and allows yourself to let go.
As you hold this position the muscles in the perineum will begin to reconfigure much like a pulley system, the change in pressure begins to help us feel more grounded and comfortable and assists in releasing any worries, anxieties, fears or concerns we are currently holding on to. These muscles are all part of your body’s inner soul seat which is connected to the pelvic floor whereby the fibrous muscle tubes begin to shift, expand or contract as necessary.
These slow and subtle changes will eventually provide a feeling of comfort and inner body grounding that may assist in removing anxiety sources including sexual frustration as we begin to feel more happy and comfortable here. When this is done with a positive inner intention and a surrendered body and mind this may put the soul into a prayerful state of being. Doing yoga or praying in this particular position is done as a sign of being humble and one of requesting rather than demanding and it enables divine spirit or God to interact with us in ways that can’t easily be seen but may be felt, heard or perceived inwardly with closed eyes.
When we do this with our eyes closed, this is known as “going within” and we can often hear our own intuitive thoughts or at times our soul speaks and interact with others nearby wherever it happens to presently be dwelling in spirit. If we combine prayer with holy or sacred music and intention we can ensure we pray or engage in activities in the appropriate environment, which assists us in getting a more positive result.
We can create intentions that make the soul seek places of quietness and solitude enabling deities and higher people in spirit to interact with us individually, at other times we may be in the presence alongside other people in spirit, this is more likely to be the case if we are presently part of a group yoga class. Whilst we might be praying from home, the soul or inner spirit can journey independently of our physical form and seeking out different places, people or locations as necessary. Meditation is one of the primary ways in which we resolve conflicts with other people.
Releasing Bad Karma
Certain yoga poses when done with the right intention and are held and sustained over time may enable one to process and release different degrees of individual past life karma. However, it is important to be aware that negative karma of this kind is usually quite traumatic to re-experience.
It is the POSAS muscle that appears to store the soul’s past life karma, which is released in the form of tension-energy as you hold a sustained position such as the one pictured above. At times one can process through listening silently in meditation where one might experience a combination of intuitive inner thoughts or still or silently spoken voices from someone in spirit.
If this energy isn’t processed in meditation, it can often play out as psychic dreams incorporating sound, energy and emotion. One of the positive aspects of processing karma appears to be the self-knowledge and wisdom we can gain and some people may feel a sense of freedom, release of tension and karmic baggage and a less tightened or constricted physical body as a result.
Performing the Half-Pigeon or King Pigeon pose is a position that will also stretch the psoas muscle (soul muscle) which intersects and passes through the pelvis and serves to connects the legs and torso together. By performing a deeper held stretch here it will begin to access deeper areas of past karma that can at times reveal information regarding other inhabitable worlds and forms your soul has chosen to take on. I would reiterate again that past life memories, traumas or processing of past karmic events can be traumatic, psychologically destabilising to one’s own sense of self and harm one’s mental and emotional well-being.
If removing karma is so bad, then why do it? Why are past lives stored in the body at all? These are all questions that I don’t have any answers to yet, but there appears to be a purpose behind this that ensures that past mistakes aren’t repeated again or so that people do not behave with a careless disregard to consequences.
The pelvic bowl and pelvic floor are seen as a highly sacred part of the body, which forms the Seat of the Soul and it can be worked with through yoga, prayer, surrendering, meditation and the metaphysical serpent and when seen within a healthy and respected divine context these activities provide healing, blissful pleasure and can lead to spiritual awakening. By addressing the health of the pelvis, pelvic floor and connecting muscle groups it is possible to achieve a comfortable state of comfort, physical grounding and embodiment.
